It is my great pleasure to finally get around to talking about something that has truly changed the way I look at fitness.
If you’ve never heard of CROSSFIT before, your not alone. A very new, and incredibly effective training system and philosophy has been introduced to the world of fitness, the likes of which have never been seen before. Simply put Crossfit involves high intensity, constantly varied, functional movements. Allow me to explain.
Crossfit workouts do not include any rest. Workouts our done as fast as possible, are always timed and the weight used is always challenging for the individual. That’s where “high intensity” comes from. Crossfit workouts can include any number of combination’s of exercises, that will almost never be repeated. That’s where the “constantly varied” comes from. Finally, Crossfit workouts involve functional movements only. This means you will only be engaging in movements that are realistic to everyday life. You will find no machines at a Crossfit gym. That is where “functional movements” come from.
What will Crossfit do for you and your fitness?
I think Crossfit founder Greg Glassman put it best when he said ” Our training program causes you to develop an increased work capacity, over broad time and motile domains.”
Even as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, it took me a few minutes to break down that sentence into something that made sense to me. So let me break it down for you. What Greg is trying to say, in simple terms, is that you will be able to handle any physical challenge life could possible throw at you, as a result of your Crossfit training program.
What general physical skills will I improve upon?
Crossfit workouts will help you to develop and improve drastically in the following areas.
Cardiovascular/Respiratory Endurance
Stamina
Strength
Flexibility
Power
Speed
Coordination
Agility
Balance
Accuracy
From a personal standpoint, after just 1 month of Crossfit workouts I was at a level of fitness that I had never seen before in my life. Crossfit continues to be my choice for optimal fitness to this day.
In conclusion let me say that although Crossfit was originally tailor made for fire fighters, police, special forces, military, and mixed martial artists, it can be modified for any age group or fitness level. This allows everyone to enjoy the fitness benefits of Crossfit. Crossfit’s national website is Crossfit.com. There you will find an affiliate page that will provide you will all of the Crossfit locations in your area.
I would also like to recommend that you read this amazing article by Crossfit founder Greg Glassman titled “What is Fitness”. You can find it on the the Crossfit website under the “What is Fitness” link.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog post and I wish you the best of health in the New Year and for the rest of your life.
